Change is constant, but all too often, falls short of the desired outcome. Whether you are directly involved in changes or not, this statement is not news. But, the approach to making changes throughout the IT industry usually falls short where people are involved. This statement is meant to be provocative.
During his presidency, Franklin Delano Roosevelt observed, “It is a terrible thing to look over your shoulder when you are trying to lead—and find no one there.” Of course, the leadership he was trying to supply had little to do with IT, but it had a lot to do with making changes and people, and that’s the subject of this month’s article. As President Roosevelt found, when we make changes, if we aren’t very careful to bring the people through them properly, we can find ourselves standing alone.
There is a huge gap between any technological change itself and the way we usually handle (or skip entirely) the people side of the change. We use the word people ubiquitously because people, whether they are inside IT or are customers of IT, are always affected in some way by a change.
