IT Change Management

What is really important?

While virtually every organization has some method of managing IT change, predictable dependable change remains elusive for many. Up to one-third of all incidents are change related.   Some of the common reasons for lack of predictable change include:

  • Change implementation versus change control orientation
  • Lack of role clarity and resources
  • Bureaucratic procedures are frequently not automated and therefore circumvented
  • Inflexible for minor or urgent changes and therefore circumvented

ITIL® states that the goal of Change Management is to "ensure that standardized methods and procedures are used for efficient and prompt handling of all changes, in order to minimize the impact of change-related incidents upon service quality, and consequently to improve the day-to-day operations of the organization."   But, as with the entire ITIL framework, how we get these tasks accomplished and who gets involved in them is largely left up to individual interpretation.  That is where we find our customers struggling—struggling to figure out how and who best to accomplish Change Management.

If you are an IT manager tasked with implementing or managing Change Management, or if you are a business leader wishing that IT would lessen the impact of changes on the business (i.e., make change predictable), this article is written for you.

LANDesk Patch Management

InformationWeek Rolling Review: LANDesk Patch Manager

InformationWeek is conducting a rolling review on patch management and recently reviewed LANDesk Patch Manager. As a rolling review, a number of products were selected and one is reviewed every month. The review is an overall technical look at how different vendors approach an issue or need. There will be a synopsis after the last product is reviewed later this year.

"LANDesk also supports a policy-based implementation, where you can define the types of patches you want to install and when. While distributing packages, we could use features like targeted multicast, which minimizes bandwidth consumed, or peer download, which capitalizes on local bandwidth by sharing packages already downloaded by one agent on a given subnet. Pretty cool.", said Michael Biddick of InformationWeek.

LANDesk Case Study

LANDesk Customer
Success Story

The mission of the Office of Information Technology (OIT) at Georgia Tech is to support and provide the academic units at the university with the technology tools they need to teach and to further their research initiatives. As a public university, one of the school’s single greatest challenges is it's limited funding.

“If the school has budget cuts, IT is the first place they look to reduce, in spite of our increasing workload,” says Robert Riding, systems support specialist at Georgia Tech. “We needed a solution that would let us do more with less, automating much of what we do.” The automation inherent to LANDesk® Management Suite enabled Georgia Tech OIT to perform management tasks on hundreds of machines without ever having to physically visit or touch those machines
