Lenovo was originally founded in 1981 as a new unit of IBM titled the Personal Computing Division, which virtually invented personal computing. In 1984, not long after PCD was founded, 11 computer scientists in Beijing, China also created a company called Legend, which opened a new era of consumer PCs in China.

Legend first introduced PCs to households, then promoted PC usage in China by establishing retail shops nationwide. It also developed the pioneering Legend Chinese Character Card that translated English operating software into Chinese characters, and achieved breakthroughs like PCs with one-button access to the Internet.

In 2003, Legend changed its brand name to Lenovo, taking the "Le" from Legend, a nod to its heritage, and adding "novo," the Latin word for "new," to reflect the spirit of innovation at the core of the company. The company name changed from Legend to Lenovo a year later.

Today, these two companies are united under the Lenovo name. With Lenovo's landmark acquisition of IBM's Personal Computing Division in May 2005, the new Lenovo is a leader in the global PC market, with approximately $13 billion in annual revenue, and products serving enterprises and consumers the world over.

Microsoft was founded as a partnership on April 4, 1975, by William H. Gates III and Paul G. Allen, and incorporated on June 25, 1981. Headquartered in Redmond, Wash., the company operates subsidiary offices in more than 60 foreign countries and employs nearly 49,000 people worldwide.

Yet, in 1975, Bill Gates and Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen saw the potential to turn a hobbyist's toy into something more. They sold the first software language program, called BASIC, for the Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems (MITS) Altair 8800, the first "personal computer." BASIC, and the many software programs that followed from Microsoft developers and partners, helped spark a technology revolution that has transformed how we do business, how we live, and how we learn.

Microsoft creates software; the instructions that help electronic devices like computers, cars, and digital cameras work. Millions of people around the world use Microsoft technology every day. From multinational corporations that do business in many currencies and languages to small companies that count on just-in-time inventory systems to keep orders flowing. Educators and students use Microsoft software for lesson plans, homework, and collaborating on projects. In the home, families manage their personal finances, share photographs, and communicate online.

Microsoft believes that the true measure of their success is not reflective in the power of their software, but in the power it unleashes on the world.
